About Barnegat Light, Long Beach Island

Barnegat Light is located at the north end of Long Beach Island (LBI). A quaint little borough, the town is less than one square mile has a winter population of a little over 700 and for all intent and purpose, it hasn't changed much since the early 1900's. Barnegat Light is still a town all about fishing, just as it was when the English Crown first deeded the area in 1692. In addition to scallopers and all other types of fisherman, Barnegat Light is also the homeport to many members of the East Coast's Longline Fleet. These fishermen set their sights on larger fish such as tuna and swordfish and regularly fish in high seas several hundred miles offshore.

"Old Barney", the red and white-banded Barnegat Lighthouse, is by far and away Barnegat Light's most famous "local". Situated at the northern tip of Long Beach Island, the 172 foot tall structure, designed by General George Meade and commissioned January 1, 1859, is the second tallest lighthouse in the United States. "Old Barney" still attracts thousands of visitors every summer to Barnegat Lighthouse State Park, even with the tower's light having been "snuffed out" in 1944.

In addition to the Lighthouse, the north end of Long Beach Island is also home to one of the last remaining tracts of maritime forest, located in the state park. An amazingly diverse number of species inhabit the park and it is a key resting and feeding ground for birds migrating to and from their breeding areas.
